Inside the Sandstorm office

As a boutique interactive marketing agency, we're always keeping an eye out on the big interactive players in the marketplace. Forrester's report for Q2 this year includes Sapient, imc2, Razorfish, IconNicholson, and IBM Interactive as the star performers, with a few of our Chicago locals also being noted including Critical Mass, Whittmanhart and Ogilvy Interactive. These companies have multiple locations - and often are found in NY and CA, in addition to Chicago. Take a slice of one of them, and you have us here at Sandstorm...

We've gone head-to-head with Whittmanhart, Sapient, and Ogilvy in the past, but the reality is that we're a great example of a boutique shop and they represent the bigger players. So when the time comes, companies have to first make the choice to go boutique or go big - and then they get a short list from there.

Go boutique agencies!!!

Content Writing

One company may beg to differ. We beg to write.

I'm talking website copy for the clients of our marketing and web design firm. We'll beg, we'll plead, we'll keep our fingers crossed - just for the opportunity to write the content. And here is the number one reason why... so we can hit our deadlines. When we meet with a new client and they ask "What do you see that will hold up our deadline?" I'll respond, start writing your content.

To help with this, we're starting to put together content templates to help mitigate the random copywriting we get when multiple SME's write for the same company. Erin Kissane wrote a great blog entry on content templates that goes into detail on how to use them. Thanks Erin!

So I don't usually write about pop culture, nor about tragedies in the news. But the Michael Jackson brand has just exploded. The PR, the news, the talk shows, the memories, the brand. As I am writing this, there are 404,210 memories from Michael Jackson fans worldwide on the Michael Jackson web site (and growing by the minute!). Web sites are popping up everywhere selling memorabilia. I predict the Michael Jackson brand will only get stronger. And the name 'Michael' will now make it back to the #1 boy's name for 2010 (it was slipping a few years ago after the Michael Jordan days).

Sandstorm Design is pleased to announce the launch of MissionGetHired.com, a new CareerBuilder.com site that helps U.S. Veterans find jobs. Sandstorm Design proudly developed the new brand name, information architecture, experiential design and messaging for the site, adapting the CareerBuilder.com brand to cater to U.S. Veterans. "We wanted to create an online experience that spoke directly to Veterans," creative director, Janna Fiester, said regarding the brand strategy.

The site launched in April of 2009 and instantly received recognition. Pentagon correspondent, Barbara Starr, mentioned the site on CNN's Road to the Rescue segment – the only feature thus far with a positive spin on unemployment. Veteran employment is currently at 8.1%, compared to the 8.8% overall United States unemployment rate.

Is twitter a fad or will it turn into a lead generating machine?

So we started a twitter account for Sandstorm. Holly has put together a Twitter strategy for our web design firm and we now have over 200 followers within our first few weeks. Within days we got Obama and the Chicago Cubs to follow us - which was fun to tell my parents as it sounded impressive. Anyway, we're (I mean Holly) is regularly tweeting, and we're testing a few content directions, and building our own case study on our experience with Twitter. As a B2B company, will Twitter just distract us from the marketing that we know works for us, or will it become part of our integrated marketing campaign that we can't live without? Stay tuned and follow us.

Sandstorm Design has been selected to design, write and build the new site promoting NAR’s Green Designation and the Green REsource Council. The designation is the first of it’s kind from NAR and caters to residential, commercial and property management professionals.

The site will allow users to learn about the designation, sign up for courses, find NAR Green Designees in their area, access member benefits and connect with industry resources. Launch is expected at the end of April. Stay tuned for more information!
